Just ten days ago the Henleys were all dressed as seamen

You see it was my Dad’s birthday.

And as the Henley unit is a unit that celebrates properly, we elected for a pirate themed escape room.

Four Henleys, one room – ask anyone who knows us, it’s chaotic

But I’m of the opinion, it’s also bloody special.

Let me paint a picture of team Henley tackling an escape room:

I am the only Henley who can do a Rubiks cube – gaming wizard and spatial awareness beast, I’m up in the puzzles from the moment we step aboard

Big sis Anna is the (self-proclaimed) Hermione of the group – she likes to think she’s steering the ship but unfortunately this crew has a taste for mutiny

Sally, our darling mother is a vibe merchant – and always the first to dispense a ‘woop woop’ (plus she’s a sniper with a word puzzle)

And Tony, is one of the finest out-the-box thinkers of our age  – in fact his brain often goes so far out the box we’re questioning what country he’s in

Sounds like the dream team right?

But I’ve yet to introduce our secret weapon…

Henergy.

What’s Henergy? I guess it’s a mystical kind of energy that you possess as a Henley.

And a word that we (and others) use to label our special flavour of strange…

How do I describe Henergy…?

Chaotic and nonsensical to anyone with no Henergy

On the surface I know it sounds like we’re just a bit odd (and you wouldn’t be wrong)

But Henergy has also got a soft and chewy centre that’s pretty awesome.

You see, we connect over living big-ly without judgement, over valuing laughs rather than perfection, and on building a vibe rather than trashing it

So yeah, it’s mad, but in a bloody good-hearted and lovely way. And for us it’s become a bit of a belief system

Pray with me: In the name of the father, named Tony, and the Henley spirit

So cut back to our escape room and we’re all there doing our thing

The Henergy is Henergy-ing

By which I mean we’re all running around like headless chickens, making lots of noise, vibrating around the room like frying mince…

Ideas, ideas ideas

Good job, good job, good job

What’s this? What’s that? Has anyone seen…?

And yet, somehow, we’re all tuned into the same frequency.

It was magnificent.

At one point I was standing on deck with a pirate sword in my hand and a hat on my head, looking at my Dad struggle to get into a waistcoat.

And I remember thinking, god my family are the tits….

….And they’ve shaped Henley Fitness just as much as I have

Because Henergy runs right through the heart of what we do here at Henley Fitness.

Sure we’re a bit mad and sweary

But we also place importance on creating a welcoming training atmosphere online

(we like to think of ourselves as the less scary corner of the online fitness community)

And we listen and tailor the way we work with people to suit those at all levels.

You don’t want to track calories? No problem. Not able to get to the gym? Home work outs have got you covered. Never held a dumbbell before? We’ll show you how (the Bits app is a good place to start).

But the most important thing to me as a fitness coach?

We celebrate the wins, we motivate with joyful little nuggets (whilst keeping you accountable of course) and we value effort and laughter over perfection.

We escaped that pirate ship with over 10 minutes to spare, not a single clue required.

How did we celebrate?

We danced.

Not a modest little fist pump or a shy little jazz hand.

But we full on went for it like a dance troop at a year six talent show.

Arms everywhere, jumping about (I think there was wooping?)

Me, my sister, my mum and Tony, absolutely losing it to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack.

All of us grinning from ear to ear.

And that’s Henergy in a nutshell baby.
